I’m listening and this time reading along and I’m still at work on Friday afternoon with little C.O. out of Glouster when he bursts
Maximus II. 90

while on
Obadian Bruen’s Island, the Algonquins
steeped fly agaric in whortleberry juice,
to drink to see

O go on C. Olson …

“don’t be fooled by the universalization of the present. [strikes a match] The work, the real work of the future has already been done, and the future that is proposed is a lie. [pause] I didn’t know I was going to get that up! Man, is this Hamlet?”

The Maximus poems will do as they do and I will read them all one day but not now.I have to read Heroditus and know something about Tyre and also the deep history of Virginia and Boston and the kinds of salt to keep fish and what exactly a shoal feels like and if Adam Smith really was a poet, if he was cured of his skin’s burns and “meubles” and Thucidides and furthermore Orontes, which C.O. calls a “congested poem.” You see all of this plus stuff is to be mine upon reading and reading my C.O.

And just in case you are wonder what the Cut is it is a plug in the Annisquam River which builds up and shuts it off, shuts off the passage btw the Ipswich Bay and the Mass. Bay. So you’ve got to cut thru it. It was there when Champlain was there, at the beginning, when Adam Smith was there, and then twenty years later it closed and it determinies whether it’s an island , when it’s in and when it’s out.
